In light of the POUNDS Project temporarily shutting down its overdose prevention site, Northern Health is stepping up to the plate to fill the void.
It’s Prince George Harm Reduction Clinic located at 277 George Street is implementing expanded hours due to the continued high rates of toxic drug
poisoning in the community as well as improve access to services.
In addition, the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (needle exchange) in Prince George has been piloting expanded hours for Overdose Prevention Services for the past two
weeks, ensuring staffing resources are in place for the expanded operations.
As of Monday (June 26th), OPS services are now available from 9:00 to 11:30 am, and from 1:15 to 6:30 pm Monday through Saturday.
Nursing services are also available by appointment from 9:00 to 11:30, with open clinic hours from 1:15 to 6:30 pm.
Spokesperson, Eryn Collins told Vista Radio the health authority is hopeful the new hours of operation will assist more people looking to get help.
“While it’s not directly related to some of the challenges that organizations elsewhere in the community have been having, we are hopefully having these expanded hours for our own overdose prevention services will help ensure people have ongoing access to services.”
Furthermore, Mobile Harm Reduction Supplies (the Wellness Truck) will operate from 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm, six days per week (Monday to Saturday).
Collins also confirmed drug checking services are still available at the POUNDS Project from their 3rd Avenue location Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 6pm and by appointment only.
