The long wait for parents in the area is almost over; the College Heights Community Association and the City of Prince George have signed off on a 15-year lease for the Malaspina Kool Cats Kid Care location.
The first kids will begin receiving care at the daycare on July 10th, with a formal grand opening set for September.
In total, 83 spaces will be made available at the centre:
- 24 spaces for infants and toddlers.
- 25 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age.
- 24 spaces for school-aged children.
- 2 classes of 20 preschool children each on a part-time basis.
According to the city, “The Malaspina daycare is one of three facilities funded by the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund and the Union of BC Municipalities Childcare Space Creation Fund. Both sources provided nearly $12 million to the City of Prince George for use in developing a total of 228 new childcare spaces on three sites.”
The other two are the YMCA Park House and Learning Centre and Tsulh’cho/Huckleberry Daycare.
Kool Cats has been providing the area with childcare for the last 28 years from their location on Gladstone Drive.
According to an email sent to parents obtained by My PG Now, the daycare has not yet applied for the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative, and the costs – at least for now – will be high.
Kool Cats said they cannot apply quite yet, they need their Facilities Care License first, which requires them to have all their equipment in the building, which required the lease to be signed.
