Wind continuing to impact Tsah Creek and Finger Lake wildfires

The BC Wildfire Service is continuing to battle wildfires in the VanJam Fire Centre.

Since being discovered on Wednesday, the Tsah Creek wildfire has grown to an estimated 390 hectares in size.  (As of 3:36 pm Monday)

The fire is located approximately 24 kilometres south of Fort St. James on the west side of Highway 27.

“What we are trying to achieve on that fire is to limit any further spread as much as possible,” said Fire Information Officer Forrest Tower.

Tower noted the fire has not crossed Highway 27 as of the latest update he received, which came at around 2:00 p.m..

“We have equipment lines going in at the head of the fire and that’s being supported by air tankers and heavy helicopters. We’ll have to see how conditions move throughout the afternoon and into the evening period.”

According to the BC Wildfire Service Website, there are currently 56 wildland firefighters, 13 helicopters, and 11 pieces of heavy equipment responding to the wildfire, as well as an incident management team.

Tower added wind is having quite a big impact on all of the fires in the area.

The Finger Lake wildfire, located about 60 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof, is about 270 hectares. (As of 10:50 pm Sunday)

“We are seeing fire activity as things continue to dry out and heat up,” Tower said.

“They’re beginning to increase and will most likely remain fairly bigger as we move forward into this week.”

Tower added they’re not seeing as much activity on the Tatin Lake Blaze, which is approximately 15 kilometres west of Fraser Lake, and 3 kilometres north of Highway 16.

“That one in particular doesn’t have as much potential right now as the other two,” he said.

“Just in terms of potential impacts to main forest service roads or highways, that’s kind of our priority right now.”

As of 5:47 pm yesterday (Sunday) the Tatin Lake fire is estimated at just six hectares.
