Volunteers getting ready to help evacuate animals if needed

The group that brought hundreds of animals to safety during the 2017 wildfires is putting out the call for people with trailers again.

Chelsea Wallach was one of the organizers that brought 478 animals to Prince George from places like Williams Lake and Burns Lake.

“We had over 300 volunteers, in the end, come through our doors and the trailers were just going,” Wallach said.

“The first round into Williams Lake I took 13 of my closest friends and their trailers, we did a load there and from there it just exploded and expanded.”

Wallach was one of two residents who received the Community Champion Award of Merit in 2018, for acts of volunteerism during times of crisis.

“It was absolutely mind-blowing and incredible how the different communities and Prince George especially, stepped up to help each other, the surrounding communities and just keep everyone and everything as safe as we could.”

Wallach is reaching out to people with trailers in case they’re needed to evacuate animals again this year.

“We need to have people in line that we trust, and are highly capable, and understand the job of get in, get out, and get it done, and get everybody to safety as quick as we can and turn around and do it again,” she explained.

She said that so far, there’s already been calls from the Cariboo and Burns Lake.

“Their communities have reached out just to see what Prince George’s plan is and where they can go from there,”

“So far there’s nothing concrete as we’re hoping we won’t need it, but the city has been working with a few different organizations and if need be, we will be accepting animals from outside of town.”
