Lheidli T’enneh Childcare Centre to offer 75 new spaces in Prince George

Site preparation will start tomorrow (Wednesday) at the future Lheidli T’enneh Childcare Centre.

The centre will offer 75 new childcare spaces:

  • 24 for infants and toddlers
  • 25 for children aged three to kindergarten age
  • 26 for school-aged children

“Our nation has waited a long time to begin work on a Childcare Centre that incorporated Lheidli T’enneh and Dakelh values and principles,” said Lheidli T’enneh Councillor Kyle McIntosh.

“Our initial priority project was our new Health Centre which opened last year in the Northside subdivision. We can now focus on construction of our Childcare Centre. We have known for several years that Prince George requires more childcare spaces and we wanted to create an Indigenous focused Childcare Centre that welcomes all children.”

McIntosh added the centre will be a 24/7 centre, to allow more parents to access childcare when they need it.

“I’m not too sure what the staffing is going to be required for that, and so this is the processes we’re going to have to figure out,” McIntosh said.

“I know some people within the fire department, RCMP, nurses, doctors, and they’ve been in desperate need for childcare and so it just kind of came to fruition that this just makes sense.”

Funding for the project was announced by the provincial government in May 2021.

The new centre will be located at the corner of 20th Avenue and Gorse Street, and is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
