Over 2,500 lightning strikes occurred in PG Fire Centre during thunderstorm

The skies definitely lit up across the Prince George Fire Centre last night (Thursday).

According to the BC Wildfire Service, over 2,500 lightning strikes were recorded across the centre.

Fire Information Officer, Sharon Nickel told MyPGNow.com they won’t know if any new fire starts will pop up until the weekend.

“If there is an identifiable lightning tree and we kind of see that way, that is one thing but a lot of times with the lightning strikes they will often go underground and into the roots system and then pop up as the fuels warm and dry.”

Nickel added this doesn’t change much in terms of the drought conditions.

“The warmer and drier weather that we are expecting kind of coming out of the coming days with that unsettled pattern there still is not enough precipitation that has happened to really get us out of the drought conditions we have been seeing.”

The late-night weather event was also accompanied by six millimetres of rain at Environment Canada’s weather station in Prince George.

In addition, a severe thunderstorm watch is currently in place for PG.
