The Prince George Fire Centre has been doused with rain over the past few days with more in the forecast over the next few days as well.
Fire Information Officer Davin Richmond says more rain on the way is certainly welcome.
“It really depends on which model you’re looking at, but Environment Canada is predicting between 20 and 40 millimetres in some areas with higher accumulations along the Rockies, and in areas of isolated heavy rainfalls kind of up in Fort Nelson as well,” he said
“That’s going to decrease our fire activity on our active larger wildfires, and ideally will help us in having initial attack success on our new wildfires we’ve been detecting.”
Richmond noted that with the significant lightning activity in the area, they are anticipating finding some new starts.
“We are prioritizing our fires that are threatening life and property, as well as anything that has critical infrastructure involved,” said
“We’ve received significant lightning activity since Thursday, we’ve received approximately 36,000 lightning strikes with 91 new wildfires either detected or reported since Thursday.”
There are currently eight wildfires of note in the Prince George Fire Centre.
Australian Incident Management Teams, Mexican Wildfire fighting staff, American smoke jumpers and hotshot crews, and additional support from the Canadian Forces are active in the Prince George Fire Centre.
