First tree planted at new REAPS community garden

Ground has been broken at REAPS’ (Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society) new Growing Knowledge Community Compost Garden inside the David Douglas Botanical Garden at UNBC.

The 1240 square foot garden is triple the size of their current garden at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, according to Terri McClymont, REAPS’ Executive Director.

“We are excited because we are going to have a lot more outreach with the community,” she explained, after helping plant the first tree.

When the project is done, McClymont said the garden will include an office, a pergola, 40 community garden beds, composting, a greenhouse, and more.

Funding is the biggest hurdle between these plans and reality, McClymont said the first phase of this garden has already cost the organization $120,000.

“We have some big grant applications going out, hopefully we are successful,” she said, adding that every dollar helps, from large grants to small donations.

Crews will continue to shape the space over the rest of the summer and fall, McClymont said planting will begin in the spring and people can begin to enjoy the space then.
