Generous golfers help raise $119-thousand for Special Olympics PG

Special Olympics Prince George held the annual Special Olympics Charity Golf Classic this weekend to raise money for the organization.

Generous golfers teed off at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club on Friday, helping raise $119,000.

“We were never expecting to make that much,” said Wilma Van Hage, Public Relations Coordinator for Special Olympics Prince George.

“When we first started, we thought we’d get about $60,000, and it ended up being double that.”

Van Hage says the money will help fund the programs such as their swimming, golfing, curling and bowling programs, as well as covering travel expenses for athletes.

“Our athletes don’t really pay anything for travel, so we are paying for bussing, accommodations, meals, all that stuff as well,” Van Hage explained.

“That’s a major expense for us, because we live so far away from most of the competitions, so we’re always having to travel to either, Kelowna or Vancouver or whatever.”

Van Hage says Special Olympics PG is thankful for the support.

“Prince George is an amazing community and they really come through, they really help out when you need it.”
