People in Prince George affected by dementia were invited to share their experiences in the community.
This was part of a dialogue session put on by the Alzheimer’s Society of BC this afternoon (Tuesday).
“One of the big things about having this sort of dialogue is we can take this information and we can apply it to our own programs and services,” said Jennifer Lyle, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.
“Not only that, but we’re in conversation with people within the healthcare system and also within government so we can help inform some of the decisions that are being made at that broader policy level.”
Lyle said they heard some common challenges around accessing services and around transportation.
“Especially in the winter for people who perhaps can’t drive in the snow, or don’t have access to a vehicle,” she explained.
“We also heard from people just how difficult it can be to access services period, whether it’s finding a family physician or just finding a care worker who can come in and help support.”
Lyle said they also heard about challenges about stigma.
“People being in denial or afraid to reach out for help because they don’t necessarily know what the answer is or they’re afraid of hearing they are living with dementia,” she said.
She added they’ve been hearing those common themes in other communities.
“I would say there are some unique considerations in the north though,” Lyle said.
“For example, challenges around snow removal and how winter is such a game changer when it comes to getting around the community, that’s definitely unique, and that’s one of the important things about these conversations, is we get that perspective from each community and then we can weave that into a broader perspective about what comes next.”
Lyle said the Alzheimer’s Society of BC will be hosting similar sessions in other communities.
Thank you so much to @AlzheimerBC for co-hosting this important dialogue in the #CityofPG. Many people shared their stories, provided feedback about gaps and some great ideas for improved support. Thankful for everyone who attended and to the team at ECRA for the awesome job! https://t.co/OQq1rO8JVH
