Local fuel prices to remain low heading into Labour Day weekend

Prince George residents planning to hit the road this Labour Day long weekend won’t have to worry about rising gas prices.

Most stations in Prince George are expected to remain at 167.9 cents per litre while Costco continues to be the cheapest option to fill up at 163.9.

Canadians for Affordable Energy President, Dan McTeague told MyPGNow.com it’s been a weird year for fuel prices.

“Markets have been moving in strangely different directions. That means while gasoline hasn’t really gone anywhere sometimes up, sometimes down – it is diesel that continues to be the greatest concern.”

On a good note, the lower fuel prices we’ve come to enjoy in the northern capital are likely to take an even further dip by mid-September.

“It looks like we are going to see that traditional drop in prices that we get on the 15th or so in September. That’s when refineries switch from more expensive summer blends of gasoline to winter. That could see a drop of about four or five cents a litre.”

McTeague added while gas prices are a little more affordable for drivers, diesel is a totally different story.

“The not-so-good news is on the diesel side. Given the concern about the amount of inventory being 15% below what they should be for this time of year.”

Another point of concern for McTeague is that the Canadian dollar isn’t responding like it did in the past to higher energy prices – a trend McTeague believes is worth watching.

“That is important because all of our commodities that we use in Canada whether they are made here or not are priced in US terms. For instance, some people think a weak Canadian dollar is but I can assure it is not – in the case of us here in Prince George, it is adding about 26 cents to a litre of gasoline.”

In addition, McTeague says major centres like Vancouver are expected to see a nine-cent decrease starting tomorrow (Friday).
