PG RCMP offers safety tips to firearms owners as hunting season kicks into gear

Police in Prince George are reminding those traveling with non-restricted firearms about a few safety tips and rules.

“With many hunters and firearms enthusiasts travelling through Prince George and staying at hotels or with family and friends, the detachment wants to remind them about the safe storage and transportation of their firearms when they are leaving their vehicle, either for a quick stop for food or while they overnight in our City,” stated Cpl. Jennifer Cooper.

Traveling:

Ensure that your firearm is transported out if sight, either in a locked trunk or lockable compartment. If the vehicle does not have a locking trunk or compartment, you must make sure they are out of sight inside the locked vehicle. For example, under the back seat or covered with a blanket. Non-restricted firearms must be unloaded during transportation.

Storage:

You cannot store your firearms in your vehicle overnight. Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock, remove the bolt so that the firearm cannot be fired or lock the firearms in a container that is difficult to break into. Bring your firearms into your hotel or temporary residence with you and place them out of sight and store them unloaded.

Hunters or recreationists must also store the ammunition separately from the firearm or in the same locked container as the firearm if you are traveling with a locking gun case.

Decals or stickers on your vehicle that advertise that you own or like guns could make it more likely that you will become a target of theft.

Consider removing these decals or else take all necessary precautions to make sure you are traveling with and storing your firearms securely.
