PG RCMP catches eight speeding drivers during back to school campaign

You can expect local law enforcement to be at more school zones throughout the academic year in Prince George.

During its one-day, back-to-school speed zone campaign police issued eight violation tickets and 12 warnings to motorists while at Peden Hill and Pineview Elementary Schools last week.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper with the Prince George RCMP told MyPGNow.com drivers also need to put their cell phones away when passing through these high-traffic areas.

“As our visual attention is reduced by half when you are distracted by a handheld device. So, we already have the kids running unpredictably back and forth or off the sidewalk and into traffic.”

“The final tally (for violation tickets) was surprisingly high for the first day back to school. There were a lot of parents driving through the school zone as well – everybody needs to make sure that they are slowing down in our school zones.”

School zones are in effect every academic day from 8 AM to 5 PM where the speed limit is 30 km/hr.

Every year in BC, three children are killed and another 359 are injured while walking or cycling – this includes 59 in school or playground zones according to ICBC.
