World Taekwon-Do Championships experience a stepping stone for PG’s Jenna Hamel

A Prince George teenager is back on home soil after competing in the International Taekwon-Do Federation World Championship in Finland.

Jenna Hamel represented Canada’s Junior team at the event and while she didn’t return with a medal, the 17-year-old told MyPGNow.com it was an awesome experience.

“Going down there and seeing all the different countries and seeing how everyone else competes and their way of doing things is very different from the way we compete.”

Simply put, the techniques incorporated by the international countries at the competition are rather unique and something to take note of in the future.

“They do a lot of lead-leg kicking, which we have not kind of incorporated yet as they mainly do lead leg down there and it’s just super interesting,” said Hamel.

“Their way of sparring is different too. Because they are all close together in Europe, they get to have competitions every week – so when we go down there it is a big game-changer because we don’t have those competitions every week.”

Earlier this year, Hamel represented Prince George’s Family Taekwon-Do in Vernon at the Canadian National Taekwon-Do Championship and finished second place in the Junior Black Belt division.

The 17-year-old may be headed to Westerns next month in Regina and is also preparing for Nationals and World Cup competitions in 2024.
