Major League Baseball:

Toronto Blue Jays  6  New York Yankees  1

The Blue Jays extended their winning streak to five games.

Toronto sits in the second wild-card spot in the American League, one game ahead of both the (84-68) Texas Rangers and the (84-68) Seattle Mariners.

On Wednesday, Seattle doubled Oakland 6-3 and Texas crushed Boston 15-5.

The (85-67) Jays, with 10 games left, visit the (76-76) Yankees again tonight (Thursday 4:05 PT) as Toronto goes for a 3-game sweep.

Jared Young of Prince George did not play for the Chicago Cubs in their Wednesday 13-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 28-year-old Young was called up by Chicago from its Triple-A Iowa farm club this week.

He belted a pinch-hit RBI triple in a Tuesday 14-1 victory over the Pirates bringing his big-league batting average this year to .194 in 14 Major League games.

 

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings have added former NHL defenceman Brandon Manning to their coaching staff.

The 33-year-old from P.G. will be the team’s Skills and Development Coach.

Manning was a former Spruce King player who went on to play 255 games in the NHL, the majority with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Spruce Kings start their regular season on the road Saturday night at 6:00 against the Silverbacks in Salmon Arm.

Their home opener will be played Sept 29th against Chilliwack.

The Spruce Kings finished 3-2 in the pre-season.

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars begin their regular season with a home doubleheader against the Tri-City Americans on Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday night at 6:00.

The Cougars play seven of their first nine and nine of their first 12 games at CN Centre.

NFL:

Week 3 of the NFL season starts tonight (Thursday at 5:15 PT) with the (1-1) NY Giants at the (2-0) San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers are one of nine teams that have won their first two games.

CFL: (Week 16)

The (9-4) B.C. Lions, with five games to go in their regular season, can officially nail down a playoff spot with a win against the (4-10) Elks Friday night (6:30 PT) in Edmonton.

The other Friday game to begin Week 16 has (6-7) Saskatchewan at (3-10) Ottawa (4:00).

The Lions are 2nd in the West Division, two points behind the (10-4) Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a game in hand.

The Blue Bombers are idle this week.

BC Football Conference (BCFC)

The (2-4) Prince George Kodiaks junior football team will be on the road for a game against the (4-2) Valley Huskers on Saturday afternoon in Chilliwack.

The Kodiaks have just four games remaining in their second BCFC season.

Canada West Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves are home this weekend in both men’s and women’s Canada West Soccer.

The (1-5-1) UNBC men host the (4-0-1) Alberta Golden Bears Friday at noon and the (2-2-3) Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday at noon at Masich Place Stadium.
