WHL:

It is the start of the WHL season for the Prince George Cougars.

The Cougars open on home ice against the Tri-City Americans tonight (Friday) at 7:00 and Saturday night at 6:00 in a doubleheader.

The two teams met in the 2023 playoffs with Prince George eliminating Tri-City in six games in the opening round.

The Cougars begin with seven of its first nine games at CN Centre.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce get their BCHL season going with a road game Saturday night at 6:00 in Salmon Arm against the Silverbacks.

Salmon Arm swept Prince George four games to none in last season’s playoffs.

The Spruce Kings’ home opener is set for Friday, September 29th against the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Canada West Soccer:

It is a busy weekend for the UNBC Timberwolves with home doubleheaders in both men’s and women’s Canada West Soccer.

The (1-5-1) UNBC men host the (4-0-1) Alberta Golden Bears today (Friday) at noon and the (2-2-3) Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday at noon at Masich Place Stadium.

The (0-5-1) UNBC women entertain the (2-3-3) Alberta Pandas tonight at 6:00 and the (6-0-1) MacEwan Griffins Sunday afternoon at 2:15.

Volleyball:

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men’s volleyball team has exhibition games in Prince George against MacEwan University.

They are scheduled for tonight (Friday) at CNC and Saturday, night at the Northern Sport Centre with both contests getting underway at 7:00.

 

BC Football Conference (BCFC)

The (2-4) Prince George Kodiaks junior football team has just four games to go in its second BCFC season with one of them this weekend.

The Kodiaks visit the (4-2) Valley Huskers on Saturday afternoon (2:00 kickoff) in Chilliwack.

Major League Baseball:

New York Yankees  5  Toronto Blue Jays  3

The loss ended the Jays 5-game winning streak.

Toronto sits in the second wild-card spot in the American League, 1/2 a game ahead of both the (84-68) Texas Rangers and the (84-68) Seattle Mariners.

The (85-68) Jays, with nine games left, visit the (94-60) Tampa Bay Rays today
(Friday 3:40 PT) to begin a 3-game series.

The Mariners tonight play at Texas (5:05 PT).

Jared Young of Prince George did not play for the Chicago Cubs in their Thursday 8-6 loss  to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 28-year-old Young was called up by Chicago from its Triple-A Iowa farm club this week.

He belted a pinch-hit RBI triple in a Tuesday 14-1 victory over the Pirates bringing his big-league batting average this year to .194 in 14 Major League games.

Young also sat out Wednesday’s 13-7 Cubs loss to the Pirates.

 

NFL: (Week 3)

San Francisco 49ers  30  New York Giants  12

The 49ers are 3-0 and one of nine unbeaten teams in the NFL.

The Giants are 1-2.

There are 13 games on Sunday and two more on Monday.

CFL: (Week 16)

The (9-4) B.C. Lions can officially clinch a playoff spot if they beat the (4-10) Elks
tonight (Friday night at 6:30 PT) in Edmonton.

The other CFL game this evening to start Week 16 has (6-7) Saskatchewan at (3-10) Ottawa (4:00).

The Lions are 2nd in the West Division, two points behind the (10-4) Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a game in hand.

The Blue Bombers are idle this week.
