WHL:

The Prince George Cougars have named defenceman Hudson Thornton their 29th Captain in franchise history.

The 20-year-old Thornton is in his final WHL season.

The (1-1) Cougars visit the (0-2) Victoria Royals tonight (Friday) and Saturday.

This is the start of six P.G. games in a nine-day span.

The Cougars went 8-0-0-1 in nine meetings last season against the Royals, including 4-0 in Victoria.

The Cats will have both goalie Ty Young and Riley Heidt in their lineup after both were returned this week from NHL camps.

They are still waiting for Koehn Ziemmer who has been with the LA Kings.

The (0-1) Prince George Spruce Kings host the (1-1) Chilliwack Chiefs tonight (Friday) at 7:00 in their home opener.

The Spruce Kings also entertain the (1-1) Merritt Centennials on Saturday afternoon at 3:00.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The (2-0) U18 Cariboo Cougars have their home openers in the BC Elite Hockey League.

They entertain the (2-0) Valley West Giants on Sunday afternoon at 1:15 and Monday morning at 11:00 at Kin 1.

Canada West Soccer: 

The UNBC Timberwolves are on Vancouver Island for Canada West soccer games this weekend.

The (2-5-2) UNBC men visit the (5-1-2) Victoria Vikes tonight (Friday) and Saturday night at 7:15.

The (0-7-1) UNBC women visit (4-3-2) Victoria this evening at 5:00 and the (2-3-3) Mount Royal Cougars Sunday at noon (PT) in Calgary.

Major League Baseball:

Toronto Blue Jays  6  New York Yankees  0

The (88-71) Blue Jays, with three games remaining, conclude the regular season with three home games against the (97-62) Tampa Bay Rays tonight (Friday 4:07PT), Saturday (12:07 PM PT) and Sunday (12:07 PT).

The Blue Jays sit in the second wild-card spot in the American League, one game ahead of the (87-72) Houston Astros and two games in front of the (86-73) Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 3-2 Thursday night.

The Chicago Cubs lost 5-3 to the Atlanta Braves.

The (82-77) Cubs are half a game behind the (82-76) Miami Marlins for the third and final wildcard spot in the National League.

Jared Young of Prince George has not played for the Cubs in their last five games.

The 28-year-old Young has a .205 batting average (with a pair of homers and eight RBIs) in 15 Major League games this year with Chicago.

 

BC Football Conference: (BCFC)

The (2-5) Prince George Kodiaks host the (5-1) Okanagan Sun Saturday night at 7:00 at Masich Place Stadium in their final BCFC home game of the year.

The Kodiaks will conclude with a pair on the road: October 7th at Okanagan and October 14th at Kamloops.

NFL: 

Detroit  34  Green Bay  20

The Lions improved to 3-1 while the Packers slipped to 2-2.

There are 14 NFL games Sunday plus Seattle at the New York Giants Monday to conclude the regular season.

There are three teams 3-0: Philadelphia, San Francisco and Miami.

There are four teams at 0-3: Chicago, Minnesota, Carolina and Denver.

CFL: (Week 17)

A couple of CFL games tonight to begin the 17th weekend of the season.

The (10-4) B.C. Lions host the (6-8) Saskatchewan Roughriders at 7:30.

The Lions are tied with the (10-4) Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the top spot in the CFL West Division with each team having four games left prior to playoffs.

The Blue Bombers entertain the (12-1) Toronto Argonauts this evening at 5:00 (PT).

B.C. will also host Winnipeg on Friday, Oct 6th, visit Hamilton on Oct 13th and entertain Calgary to conclude its regular season on Oct 20th.
