Klassen’s call for arts hall of fame passed unanimously

An Arts Hall of Fame could be in the cards for Prince George.

At Monday’s City Council Meeting, Councillor Trudy Klassen put forward a motion that would have the City work with the Community Arts Council on creating an arts hall of fame in our city.

“We can encourage different areas of our city with recognition, and I really think the Arts Hall of Fame is something that would be a really good thing to do,” Klassen said.

“We already have a sports hall of fame, there’s a board downstairs recognizing various sports hall of fame inductees.”

Director of Civic Facilities and Events Andy Beesley noted the City’s involvement with the Sports Hall of Fame is a good relationship, and to provide space for them.

“We have a little bit of space in the atrium in between the Kin Centre and the CN Centre,” Beesley explained.

“We’ve got a couple of display cabinets inside the CN Centre, a couple of small display cabinets, and downstairs in City Hall there’s a piece of real estate on one of the walls.”

Beesley also noted the Community Arts Council has previously done Arts Hall of Fame activities, but it’s been sporadic and on an Ad Hoc basis.

“I think the direction this will likely go and we’ve already had some discussions with them, is that we’re going to be happy to find some space for them and to make it so there’s like official wall spaces for hem,” he said.

“I would love to see one day we have two big plaques downstairs, one for the Hall of Fame for sports, one for the arts, side by side, so everybody knows in the City of Prince George, we value both equally,” added Mayor Simon Yu.

Klassen’s motion was passed unanimously.

As part of the motion, a report is expected to return to Prince George City Council at the November 20th.
