Local Hospice Society cuts the ribbon on brand new Rec Room

The Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society held a grand opening this morning (Thursday) for its brand new Rec Room to help those who are processing their grief.

The new space will serve as a dedicated space for local organizations that promote engagement and socialization for activities such as art and craft workshops, pottery, puzzles, painting, leatherworking, and more.

In addition, the rec room was inspired by those described as instrumental grievers – people who process their grief through actions.

Community Programs Manager, Denise Torgerson told the media the building can be utilized for a variety of activities.

“Our rec room will be a space for instrumental grievers to come together and maybe they will do things like a small woodworking project, a cup of coffee, and a game of crib – who knows – maybe people know how to do leatherwork.”

Several dignitaries were in attendance for the announcement including Prince George Mayor Simon YU and PG-Valemount BC United MLA Shirley Bond.

Bond noted the Hospice Palliative Care Society isn’t just a leader locally, but is also recognized province-wide.

“I think sometimes we take for granted the amazing people and place that we have to care for our loved ones, our friends, and our family here in Prince George. This hospice society literally leads our province with innovation, care, and compassion.”

In 1995, the organization opened the Rotary Hospice House – the first of its kind in British Columbia.

Lastly, the rec room is part of a backyard expansion project, which includes the incorporation of a gardening area and a labyrinth situated within the property.
