PG Teacher’s Union President has “lost sight of his position,” says SD57 Board Chair

“It is unfortunate he has lost sight of his position, being president of the Teacher’s Association.”

That was SD57 Board Chair Rachael Weber’s response to Prince George District Teacher’s Association (PGDTA) President Daryl Beauregard, who called on her to step down from her position earlier in the month.

She made the comment after last night’s school board meeting (Tuesday).

He called for her resignation because of a social media post that promoted private education – part of her early campaign as the BC Conservatives candidate for the Prince George-Mackenzie riding in next year’s provincial election, as well as other comments made at a September 5th meeting.

“Daryl Beauregard is entitled to his opinion,” Weber said. “There are a lot of other concerns and issues he should be addressing. Unfortunately, that is not happening.”

When asked how she plans to keep her role as chair and her further political aspirations separate, Weber said “legally I am doing everything I am allowed to do. When the time comes for the necessary changes, that is when they will happen.”

In her post-meeting media availability, Weber also said while there is no public estimate as to when a new Superintendent will be named, she is pleased with how the search has gone so far.

SD57 has been without a permanent Superintendent since spring break of last year. Pam Spooner, the Indigenous Superintendent, has been serving as the acting Superintendent since then.

Last night’s board meeting also saw Spruceland Elementary School renamed to “Spruceland Community School of the Arts” on an interim basis after the school’s “Traditional” title was dropped last year.

There was also a fairly lengthy discussion about a Weber proposed policy that would require individual schools to “provide parents with sufficient notice for all school presentations.”

You can read more about that here.
