Prince George product scores golden goal at World U17 Hockey Challenge

Prince George’s Cameron Schmidt is seeing gold.

Schmidt scored the overtime winner to lift Canada White 2-1 over the Americans in the gold medal game of the U17 World Hockey Championship in Summerside, PEI.

The forward scored the tournament clinching goal with a forehand-backhand deke on a breakaway.

Schmidt scored five goals in five games in the tournament.

In his rookie season with the Vancouver Giants, Schmidt has played in ten WHL games so far this season, scoring three goals and adding five helpers.

Schmidt wasn’t the only Prince George product representing Canada in the tournament.

Chase Harrington, a forward playing for the Spokane Chiefs, played for Canada Red during the tournament.

The two Canadian teams faced off twice in the tournament.

In the preliminary round, Harrington and Canada Red picked up the 4-3 win over Schmidt and Canada White.

The Prince George Cougars will host Schmidt and the Vancouver Giants at the CN Centre for two games this week.

They’ll have to wait until March 1st and 2nd to host Harrington and the Spokane Chiefs.
