UNBC completes basketball sweep over MacEwan

When the game is on the line, veteran players need to rise to the occasion.

In the case of the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team, it came from fifth year player Spencer Ledoux whose double-double gave the hosts an 83-77 victory over the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday from the Northern Sports Centre.

Ledoux had 20 points and 10 rebounds while Darren Hunter, Justin Sunga and Josh Gillespie also tallied at least 10 points each to give UNBC a 3-1 record.

MacEwan was led by Matthew Osunde who went 7-for-15 on field goals recording 21 points in defeat.

Over half of the Timberwolves points were scored in the paint (50).

In women’s action, UNBC improved to 2-2 cruising to a 75-58 win over MacEwan. Second-year guard Amrit Manak hooped a team-high 18 points in 34 minutes of action while veteran Rebecca Landry had 14.

Forwards Bella Mesquita, Nyemuon Padhal and Sveta Boykova chipped in with a combined 25 points. Boykova was equally as impressive as a playmaker with 9 assists.

Toni Gordon led MacEwan in points with 13.

Both UNBC varsity teams are back in action Friday and Saturday as they take on Alberta in Edmonton.
