Newest men’s shed opens in Prince George

Prince George’s newest men’s shed is now open.

“It’s really a safe place for men to gather and hang out shoulder to shoulder,” explained Prince George New Beginnings Men’s Shed Founder Brent Goerz.

“Sometimes we make things, sometimes we drink coffee, and sometimes we do nothing together. It’s a place where, if you’re my age, it’s like the show ‘Cheers’, where everyone knows your name and they’re glad that you came.”

Goerz said it’s a safe place for those who are suffering from struggles with mental health.

“Many of us have a backstory with regards to men’s mental health issues, and for some us it’s quite a challenge to get out into the general public,” he explained.

“There’s only one principle to belong to a shed, and it’s that of respect.”

The opening had a large turnout of both men and women, which Goerz said made him overjoyed.

“You see both men and women coming together,” he explained.

“It’s funny because lot’s of times there’s conversations about women’s involvement, 50 per cent of all men’s sheds in BC were actually started by women, because they recognize the importance of the men in their life, they need a place to gather.”

Goerz added he could see up to six to eight men’s sheds in operation.

“Once we get to 80 members or so, we’ll talk about spawning a new men’s shed,” he said.

The New Beginnings Men’s Shed is the third in Prince George.

The new shed is located at 597 4th Avenue, and is open Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30, and on Saturdays from 12:00 to 2:00.
