KidSport seeing 28% spike in processed grant applications in Prince George as cost of living soars

The rising cost of living is putting more pressure on families to afford the basic necessities, which means enrolling a child in sports may not be an option for some.

However, Kid Sport is providing grants to help remove the financial barriers by covering the cost of registration fees.

BC Director, Angela Crowther told MyPGNow.com they are seeing a year-over-year increase in the number of processed grant applications including Prince George.

“This year, we are seeing a significant increase in grant applications throughout the province including Prince George where we have seen a 28% increase in grant applications that are being approved for funding so far this year.”

Crowther adds with many families struggling to afford the basics, putting their child in sports often gets put on the back burner.

“I think everyone is feeling the pinch when it comes to expenses for people affording the basic necessities and sports can be one of those extras where families might have to look at cutting costs but the benefits are worth the investment.”

Last year, Kid Sports chapters across BC distributed $1.7 million dollars to fund a season of sport for just under 54 hundred kicks in 180 communities across the province.

Last week, Kid Sport launched its 12th annual Give the Gift of Sport fundraising campaign in order to help more kids participate in organized sports.

It runs from now until January 8th

More than 1/3 (36%) of all grants in 2022 supported populations that are often under-represented in sports, including Indigenous children, athletes with a disability, and new Canadians
