A Quesnel soccer star will take her talents an hour south down Highway 97 this fall.
Today (Thursday), the UNBC Timberwolves Women’s Soccer signed fullback Boroka Peter for the 2024 Canada West season, and beyond.
“It feels pretty exciting. I have been working hard towards it and it is something I have wanted to achieve for a long time. It feels good to finally be there and to be able to play at that level. I love the idea of being close to home and having my family not far away. For me, Prince George is like my second home and this team is already like a second family.”
After training with her hometown QYSA in Quesnel, Peter started training with the Timberwolves Academy four years ago.
At the Academy, she learned from UNBC head coach Neil Sedgwick and assistant coach Joanne Bray.
“Knowing the references, I feel, is definitely going to help. Knowing the way they play, going to their games and watching them. Even just knowing the girls I think will be a big help, and that will ease the adjustment for me,” added Peter.
Peter is described as a willing defender, who uses her speed and positioning to cause opposing attackers problems. The 16-year-old profiles as a potential impact player at the Canada West level.
“I’m a defensive player. I would say I am very aggressive and I like to use my body to get in front of the ball. I think playing against girls who are way older than me will be different. The play will be a lot more aggressive and it’ll be a faster play than I am used to it, but I think it will be fine overall.”
Peter’s trophy case is full of awards celebrating her accomplishments in-competition and her character in life. The Correlieu Honour & Citizenship award in 2022 and 2023. The school’s Junior Athlete of the Year in 2022 and Senior Athlete of the Year in 2023.
In addition, she has also earned MVP of her ski team, where she raced competitively in alpine skiing for a decade, as well as the Citizenship Award for her cross-country team. Plus, Peter has competed in track & field, swimming, and triathlon.
Set to graduate in June, Peter plans to enroll in UNBC’s biomedical studies program. She will join her new teammates for training camp this summer.
