Adidas Executive Dan Near to take over as WHL Commissioner

The WHL has announced Dan Near will be the league’s new Commissioner.

Near’s tenure will start January 1st, 2024 as he transitions into the role, and he will take on the full responsibilities of the WHL’s Commissioner’s Office beginning February 15th.

After that, current Commissioner Ron Robison will take on an advisory role.

Robison announced in September this would be his final season as the Commissioner of the league.

“It’s a tremendous honour to have been selected as the next Commissioner of the Western Hockey League,” Near said.

“I look forward to engaging with our Clubs, players, alumni, business partners and our fans to ensure we’re building an ecosystem that’s best-in-class and gives players and their families the confidence to choose the WHL for their hockey development journey.”

Near has most recently served as the Global Head of Adidas Hockey and was responsible for leading Adidas’ entry into hockey.
