Colder weather still needed for Ice Oval to open

It could still be a while for the Ice Oval to open.

“We had just started flooding before the snow came, I think we got four or five, maybe, six floods in,” said Kathy Lewis, President of the Ice Oval Society.

“We were a little worried about the milder temperatures, whether or not it was going to create a layer of slush between the snow and the base we were starting.”

Lewis said this morning, it was a hard layer after they removed the snow.

“The little bits of snow left behind is actually a good thing for us, because it helps fill in some of the cracks,” she explained.

“Once we get the colder temperatures again we can start flooding.”

Lewis added they do have a flood plan in place for tonight, but the forecast isn’t looking great.

“We really would like it to stay below minus five during the day, but that’s just not in the forecast,” she said.

Lewis said it would be two weeks at the earliest, but it depends on the weather.

Lewis said they’re still far away from their goal of having a refrigerated ice oval, which would allow them to start their season earlier.

“It’s a multi-million dollar project to bury pipes, ideally in concrete because because that would make the surface usable in the summer for inline skating or bike riding or whatever,” she explained.

Lewis said they’re looking for opportunities for grants and other funding programs to help with their goal of refrigeration.
