PG Fire Department, RCMP to renew friendly rivalry during 2nd annual Sirens Cup hockey game

For the second year in a row, local firefighters and the Prince George RCMP are hitting the ice for the Sirens Cup Charity hockey game.

It takes place at 3:30 pm on Saturday, January 27th from the Kopar Memorial Arena.

The firefighters won last year’s game over the RCMP by a 9-5 score.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper told MyPGNow.com the game will allow fans to see local first responders in a more casual setting.

“It’s part of the harsh reality of being a first responder. You typically only meet people on one of the worst days of their lives, emotions are typically high and it’s mostly the negative emotions that we associate with the tragedies or hardship. This is a really nice way to engage with the community.”

Jason Geddes who is a director for the Prince George Firefighters Charitable Society said $1775 was raised for RCMP Victim Services and the Charitable Society last year – he explained what the firefighters did with their portion of the money.

“Last year, we purchased a cancer pump for the cancer clinic as that was something they were in great need of. Then, a little while ago, we purchased about $2500 in toys for the Christmas Wish Breakfast to go right back into the community.”

Geddes joked they’ll have to work extra hard to squeak out another victory.

“We are going to see a more motivated group this year out of the RCMP and I think that our guys will have to work really hard to repeat and come away with the victory.”

“We want to come out and put on a good show for the community. It’s a competitive game for sure and we are looking to increase this rivalry over the years. I think it will be very fun event for the community to get out and watch.”

The money raised goes towards the Cops for Cancer Tour de North and the PG Firefighters Charitable Association.

A couple hours later, the Prince George Spruce Kings will face off against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at 6pm.
