UNBC undergrad receives studentship funding for brain cancer studies

A local undergrad has become the first UNBC student to receive a two year studentship from the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

Faran Rashid has been researching the effects of cancer-fighting mushrooms and the $10,000 grant will go a long ways towards that research.

He says he was thrilled to hear the news:

“It’s amazing knowing that by doing this research, doing something that I love; I can potentially have a positive impact on someones life somewhere further down the road if we do actually characterize these compounds, and find a certain compound that inhibits cancer growth.”

He says any mushroom fractions that show promising results will then be purified and studied in depth, with the majority of these mushrooms native to Northern BC.
