UNBC President says 2023 was a banner year for a number of reasons

“2023 was the most normal year since the pandemic.”

Those are the words of UNBC President Dr. Geoff Payne as he reflects on a very successful year for the university.

In a year-end interview with MyPGNow.com, Payne stated unveiling the school’s new strategic plan in October named “Ready” is something that will help shape their success shortly.

“We had not done something that bold as an institution in quite some time and I wanted folks to share their voice on how they see their university going forward into the future.”

“We’ve got the sort of framework with those themes among our new vision and mission and now as we move into 2024, is embedding those themes in everything we do at the institution regardless of what unit or section of the university you are in. The decisions we are making, the direction we are going, it’s all aligned with our strategic plan.”

It is broken down into four key components:

  • Cultivate Curiosity
  • Act on Truth and Reconciliation
  • Empower Northern Communities
  • Foster Local Solutions for Global Impact

Other major highlights from 2023 include the appointment of Joel McKay as UNBC Board Chair, ratifying agreements very early on with many of its unions as well as maintaining its top-two status in the Maclean’s Magazine rankings.

“Our rankings, number two in Macleans highlight the strong impact that our faculty and staff have in creating a great environment for our students so that was great. I think it’s 16 out of 17 years that UNBC has ranked in the top three.”

In addition, UNBC tallied $17.7 million dollars in research income during the 2022 fiscal year, its second-highest total in school history, nearly matching its $17.8 million dollar total from 2010.
