Violent offenders to have tougher time getting bail this year

Middle-income earners will see more of their paychecks go to their retirement.

Changes effective on January 1st will see the top limit for Canada Pension Plan contributions extended to more than 68-thousand dollars an increase of 113 dollars a year in premiums.

A second tier has also been introduced, with extra payments for those earning up to 72-thousand dollars annually – an additional contribution of 188 dollars.

It’s part of a multi-year program to gradually increase contributions so that benefits can be increased in the future.

Meantime, repeat violent offenders will have a tougher time gaining bail this new year.

Federal laws going into effect on Thursday place the onus on the accused to prove why they should be released.

The stricter measures are aimed at those accused of serious firearms and weapons offenses, as well as allegations of intimate partner violence.
