Suicide-prevention barriers not coming to PG’s Simon Fraser Bridge

NOTE: This article contains sensitive descriptions regarding suicide. Please read at your discretion.

The Ministry of Transportation says additional safety measures including suicide-prevention barriers will not be installed on provincial structures in Prince George including the Simon Fraser Bridge.

The statement sent to MyPGNow.com comes after the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California saw stainless-steel mesh nets installed on both sides of the 1.7-mile bridge after a project was greenlit by state officials.

In addition, communities such as Delta have been pushing the provincial government to install anti-suicide infrastructure along the Alex Fraser Bridge, which connects Delta and Richmond.

However, ministry officials noted such measures are not possible for the bridge.

Mental health support can be found at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/mentalhealthsupports.

Residents can also call the newly installed 9-8-8 national mental health crisis and suicide prevention line, which was championed in Parliament by Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP Todd Doherty.
