Extreme Cold Warning in place for Prince George

Bundle up!

That’s the advice for Prince George and area residents as the first cold snap of 2024 has arrived.

An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued by Environment Canada as an arctic airmass over northern B.C. will bring temperatures between near minus 30 and minus 40 degrees celsius. These temperatures combined with northerly winds up to 20 km/h will generate cold wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45.

The affected areas are Prince George, Stuart-Nechako, The Lakes District, McGregor, and Williston.

The cold wind chills is forecast to last until Saturday morning when temperatures begin to moderate.

Extreme cold are of greatest risk to young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Residents should watch for cold related symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
