UNBC and Regional District offering new land use planning course

UNBC students can now get hands-on experience with the Regional District in the new Rural Futures in BC’s Provincial North course.

The Regional District will be reviewing their Electoral Area A (Salmon Valley) Official Community Plan that has been in place since 1997 this year.

Students will have the chance to “partner with the Regional District as they make a meaningful contribution to help shape the Official Community Plan.”

“We wanted to find ways to engage youth in our OCP review. Decisions about land use planning today can impact a community for years so to have youth involved in setting the vision and priorities only makes sense as they will be the ones living with those decisions,” Lara Beckett, chair of the Regional District, said in a release.

Victor Mobley, Regional District director for Electoral Area A, said “Our planning staff reached out to UNBC with the idea to partner on this initiative. We are grateful that UNBC came on board in such an innovative way to help provide a hands-on learning opportunity for students, while providing the Regional District with some invaluable input.”

The district said the course includes policy analysis and community engagement, and the work that is done in the course will be incorporated into a Community Plan draft, which will be presented to the District later in the year.
