Less than a day after getting through a week-long deep freeze, Old Man Winter has 15-20 centimeters of snow in store for the Prince George area.
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning which included areas such as Stuart-Nechako, Prince George, and Cariboo-North including Quesnel as Yellowhead and the Yellowhead Highway from Tete Jaune Cache to the Alberta Border.
In addition, a snowfall warning is also in place for Highway 97 and the Pine Pass.
Meteorologist, Lisa Erven told Vista Radio a low-pressure system will bring periods of heavy snow to the region starting tonight.
“We are expecting snowfall to get going for places like Smithers and the Pine Pass and the Mackenzie area this afternoon and then by early evening touching down into the Prince George-Vanderhoof and Yellowhead regions.”
“We are expecting heavy snowfall – the heaviest amounts for Prince George and Vanderhoof coming tonight and tomorrow morning, so expect the morning commute for Tuesday to be impacted by heavy snowfall.”
Despite the colder temperatures to begin the work week, Erven noted these types of systems aren’t entirely uncommon.
“We have got a fairly moist system moving through but also, those frigid temperatures can lead to what we call lighter snowfall densities so we can have snowfall accumulating more rapidly because the snow that is less dense has a few more air pockets.”
The snow eases to periods of light snow tomorrow afternoon or evening.
