PG’s Amber House receives 10 thousand from the province

Amber House in Prince George has received 10 thousand dollars from the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

The Funding will support aboriginal women and children who fall victim to domestic violence.

Bally Bassi with the Elizabeth Fry Society says even though aboriginal women and children make up a large percentage who are affected, domestic violence doesn’t discriminate.

“Domestic violence crosses all socio-economical, cultural, geographical, sexual orientation and anyone can be affected by domestic violence, impacting and experiencing abuse and violence.”

Bassi adds with a limited budget for service like identification, the extra money is crucial.

“There’s limited budgets in all areas including transportation whether it’s for someone who is in a abusive relationship they might need new identification, additional costs associated with replacing identification.”

The funding will also improve transportation, medical and legal services and clothing ans personal items.

Today’s announcement is part of the BC government’s 5.5 million dollar Provincial Domestic Violence Plan.
