Japanese Cooking and Culture class coming to CHSS next year

A new elective will be offered at College Heights Secondary School next year.

A proposal for a Japanese Cooking and Culture 11 course was unanimously passed at last night’s (Tuesday) School Board meeting.

The synopsis recommends the course for students with experience in the kitchen, including prior high school food classes.

“It will examine the interactions with many distinct cultures, and the Japanese attitude towards cultural integration,” the synopsis said. “Through Japanese food, we will also investigate the Japanese attitude towards arts, craftsmanship, pop culture, and domesticated international influences. The foundational skills learning in this course are transferable to other senior foods courses, post-secondary culinary studies, and daily life.”

The school is also hopeful the course strengthens the connection between CHSS and Daito Bunka IchikĹŤ, the Tokyo school that does an annual exchange with College Heights.

“It is always wonderful when you get these presentations from teachers who are invested and passionate about teaching this,” Trustee Sarah Holland said at the meeting.

Alison McNeill developed the course, she leads CHSS’ Japanese program.

You can read more about the specifics of the class starting on page 29 of this PDF.
