WHL:

17-year-old forward Hunter Laing of the Prince George Cougars is the WHL Rookie of the Week.

The 6-foot-6 Lang notched three goals and added an assist in back-to-back wins (4-1 and 9-6) over the Victoria Royals.

He has 10 goals and nine assists in 52 games this season.

The (35-15-0-2) Cougars play their next two games against the last-place Blazers, Friday in Prince George and Saturday in Kamloops.

Sniper Zac Funk has established the team record for most hat tricks in a season with seven.

The 20-year-old Funk leads the WHL in goals with 49 which is five shy of the PG Cougars team record of 54 set by Quinn Hancock in the 1997-98 season.

With 16 regular season games left, P.G. is just a point back of the Western Conference-leading Portland Winterhawks.

The (35-12-2-1) Winterhawks host the (35-17-1-2) Everett Silvertips tonight (Tuesday).

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings head to Vancouver Island this week.

Prince George will play at Victoria on Friday, at Cowichan Valley on Saturday and at Alberni Valley on Family Day, Monday, Feb 19th.

With 15 regular season games remaining, the (13-23-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, three points behind the (14-22-3-1) Merritt Centennials.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The U18 Cariboo Cougars do not play any games this week.

They will put a six-game winning streak on the line when they conclude their BC Elite Hockey League regular season with a doubleheader at Fraser Valley on Feb. 24th and 25th.

The (26-6-2) U18 Cougars are in second place, two points behind the (26-4-2-2) Vancouver North East Chiefs and one point ahead of the (26-5-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

The Vancouver Canucks will conclude a 5-game road trip tonight (Tuesday 5:30) against the (14-35-3) Blackhawks in Chicago.

The Kansas City-San Francisco Super Bowl 58 game was the most-watched telecast in history according to CBS.

The Chiefs 25-22 overtime victory averaged 123.4 million viewers across all platforms in the U.S.

Canada West basketball:

The regular season is over for the UNBC Timberwolves in Canada West basketball.

The UNBC women finished 14th out of 17 teams with a 4-16 record and missed the playoffs.

The UNBC men ended up 9-11, good for 10th place and a spot in the playoffs that will begin on Wednesday, Feb.21st in Winnipeg.

48 building permits issued in September

The City of Prince George had a strong September for building permit values.According to a report being presented to City Council at tomorrow's (Monday) meeting, the City issued 48 building permits last month, worth a combined $8.9 million. 

BMI Group acquires former Mackenzie Paper Mill

The BMI Group has acquired the former Mackenzie Paper Mill. The 885-acre property, which includes about 345,000 square feet of industrial buildings and direct rail access, will be re-established as Willmarck Mackenzie.

967 fans at Kopar Memorial Arena were treated to a high-scoring affair last night (Saturday) as the Prince George Spruce Kings picked up a 7-5 win over the Nanaimo Clippers.
