Lheidli Tenneh and Caledonia Nordic Ski Club host first Family Day at Otway

Nearly eight months after signing a partnership agreement, the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and Caledonia Nordic Ski Club held their first Annual BC Family and Lheidli T’enneh Day at Otway today. (Monday)

“It’s been kind of a slow process but we’re finally here, it’s exciting,” said Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan.

“This is kind of our first day of celebrating that partnership agreement,” said past Caledonia Nordic Ski Club President Lance MacDonald.

“It means a lot, we’re honoured to be a part of it, and honoured they’re as excited as we are.”

In addition to the outdoor activities, the Lheidli T’enneh accepted a Respectful Acknowledgement pledge from the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club.

The club was presented with five Respectful Acknowledgement plaques to be displayed in the buildings at Otway.

“It’s some of the first steps on the process of reconciliation,” said current Caledonia Nordic Ski Club President Lanita Horning.

“We’ve heard the truth over the last couple of years and now we can take the first little steps towards reconciliation.”

Logan added she hopes the continued partnership will get more youth involved in outdoor sports.

“Bring them back to the outdoor sports, get them off the video games, and get everybody family-oriented,” she said.

“That’s one thing COVID taught us, how important family is, now we can get them all out here doing outdoor activities instead of sitting in front of screens.”

Logan added the Lheidli T’enneh will be involved in the World Para Biathlon and Para Nordic events in March.
