International para ski competitions get underway with opening ceremonies Tuesday

Some of the best athletes in the world will be on display in Prince George as the 2024 Para Biathlon World Championships and Para Nordic World Cup Finals officially start on Wednesday.

Before the competition gets underway on Wednesday, opening ceremonies will be held at the Prince George Civic Centre tomorrow (Tuesday) night starting at 6:30.

“What blows my mind is what these athletes can do,” said Chair of the Local Organizing Committee Kevin Pettersen.

“They’re going down the same ski courses that able-bodied athletes would go down.”

The Para Biathlon World Championships will consist of four disciplines:

  • Para biathlon sprint (7.5 km)
  • Para biathlon individual (12.5 km)
  • Para biathlon sprint pursuit
  • Para biathlon team sprint

The Para Nordic World Cup finals will consist of:

  • Para biathlon middle-distance
  • Para cross-country 5 km (classic technique)
  • Para cross-country sprint (free technique)
  • Para cross-country long distance 20 km (classic technique)

Countries represented in the Para Biathlon World Championships include Canada, China, France, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Poland, Ukraine, and the United States.

Countries represented in the Para Nordic World Cup Finals include Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, Great Britain, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United States.

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club will offer a daily shuttle service to the trails from the Civic Centre twice a day and return twice in the afternoon.

Spectating the event is free, but parking at Otway is limited.
