2024 Para Biathlon World Championships competition about to start

The opening ceremonies are done, and competition will be underway tomorrow (Wednesday) for the 2024 Para Biathlon World Championships.

A large contingent of Prince George residents piled into the Civic Centre to welcome 185 athletes to Prince George.

The athletes received welcomes from Lheidli T’enneh Councillor Wendy Jael, Mayor Simon Yu and Local Organizing Committee Chair Kevin Pettersen.

“When you reach the opening ceremonies like this, there’s a huge sense of relief,” Pettersen said.

Athletes took to the track today for a training day prior to competition beginning tomorrow.

Pettersen added the tracks are in good condition.

“We’ve been making snow for a number of weeks, so the track has the man-made snow, a really good base,” he said.

“We had about 20-25 centimetres over the last week, so we couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Competition will start with the 7.5 km event at 10:00 am at Otway tomorrow.

A free shuttle will bring spectators to Otway from the Civic Centre at 8:30 and 11:30.

Spectating the event is free.
