Salvation Army Backpack and School Supply Drive underway

With another school year looming in the distance, The Salvation Army wants to make sure every child is prepared for September.

The famous yellow bus is at the Pine Centre Mall for the Annual Backpack and School Supplies drive.

“The start of the school year should present every child with a fresh opportunity for a successful school year,” sayus Bill Glasgow of The Salvation Army says, “Unfortunately, there are many families throughout Prince George who simply cannot afford the steep cost of purchasing a long list of required school supplies for their children.”

Families who need to register for assistance can visit the Curt Garland Community Support Centre (3500 18th Ave) on Wednesday or Thursday between 9:30am and 11:30am, but there are certain things they’ll need.

“They should bring some proof of income, just to show where their income is coming from, and proof of expenses like rent receipts and things like that to make sure they qualify,” added Glasgow.

An estimated 200 families are helped by the cause each year, and Glasgow thinks it helps kids in need get off to the best start possible.

“It helps every child have a chance to get a good start at school. I don’t know if you remember when you were a kid, but if you got into school and didn’t have everything you needed you felt pretty bad and didn’t feel very good about school. So we want to make sure we do everything we can to help every child in Prince George have a chance at a good school year.”

Donations will be accepted right up to the distribution date of September 11.
