WW2 film shooting in Prince George this week

A film set in 1940’s France is being filmed just outside of Prince George.

The BC wilderness will become the Ardennes Forest in the Battle of the Bulge in the film, titled Breakthrough, which has been shooting this week.

“It is about a battle where the Germans broke through – hence the name. Along the way a Jewish American soldier and a German soldier end up in the same trench,” Norm Coyne, a Barker Street Cinema producer said. “Through a series of circumstances they forge an unlikely bond.”

The short film is being directed by Vancouver’s Kate Green, who was a guest at Northern FanCon just after the pandemic.

Coyne said Green had interest in Prince George as a potential film location and reconnected with him when they needed a location that could pass as the French forest.

“This is the most ambitious film that we have shot to date [in Prince George],” Coyne said. “The complexity of battle scenes is something our crews haven’t seen in Prince George.”

“Having seen the footage that is coming out every single day, this is very much going to be a project that is a darling on the festival circuit,” Coyne teased.

The film was written by and stars Michael John Fuller, who is a World War 2 Military Historian.

He also thanked volunteers and businesses that have supported the shoot.

“I have never, ever had a production before that we have seen the response that we have seen,” Coyne said. “It is a really, really good sign that we are ready and there is more to come.”
