The UNBC Musical Productions Club will be bringing their talents to the spotlight next week.
They are performing Cry-Baby the musical at Theatre NorthWest, which they describe as “an absurd, campy, hysterical take on the well-known 50’s rebellious teenage romance.”
“The 50’s is such a common theme for all kinds of media, it is such a revisited era,” Bradley Charles, the show’s director, told My PG Now. “This is an absurdist, campy, insane look at the 50’s that shows more of the darkness that was there and shows it for what it really is.”
“I can’t overstate how much talent is in this club right now, it is so great,” he added.
Not only are the actors on stage impressive, Charles said they have a live professional band that will play all of the show’s music.
The show will only be on stage for nine shows, which is a shorter run than Theatre NorthWest’s mainstage productions, but Charles said the club has been working on the show since the fall.
“A really, unbelievable amount of work goes into these shows,” he said.
Most of the cast are full-time students, so rehearsals are limited to Sundays and “maybe one evening.”
“It is a long time, a lot of homework between those rehearsals, a lot of planning, and a lot of logistics,” he explained. “It feels a little chaotic behind the scenes but this is coming together really well.”
Tyree Corfe and Brooklyn Truant star opposite each other as Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker and Allison.
“I really like how lively [the show] is,” Corfe said – adding the live band will add a lot of energy to the show.
“I hope [audiences] take a step back to look at who they are – are they limiting themselves in certain groups, or are they following their passions?” Corfe said.
The show debuts on Thursday (March 14th).
