Granddaughter convinced Show Home winners to buy tickets

“I am going to be crying for days… nothing like this has ever happened to us, and it could not have happened at a better time for us.”

That is what Gladys Burgess had to say just moments after finding out she and her husband, Bob, had won the 2024 Spruce Kings Show Home Lottery.

The home, near Aberdeen Glen, is brand new and valued at $890,000.

Gladys said the couple first heard the news when Bob got a phone call from their granddaughter, saying “Do you realize you guys won the show home?”

It was the same granddaughter that just months prior convinced them to keep buying tickets for the draw and supporting the team.

“Every year we buy the ticket, this year we weren’t going to for the simple reason that we never win,” Gladys said. “She talked Bob into buying a ticket, so he bought a ticket.”

Bob’s first call was naturally to Gladys, who was at work. Understandably, she took the rest of the Friday afternoon off.

“I am so excited I can’t believe it,” Bob said. “I am trembling.”

Their granddaughter is studying in Ontario right now, Gladys tearfully said “Now we can help her more, and we don’t have to worry so much. I’ve been working at my job for 24 years, maybe now I can retire next year. It is just fantastic.”

“It is a dream come true. It is going to take a while to sink in, but this is fabulous.”

While all very sudden, the couple said there is about a 90% chance they will choose to move into the home.

Money raised from the Show Home Lottery goes to support the Prince George Spruce Kings and is essential to their operating budget every year.
