Fitness testing a vital step for the Cougars

The Prince George Cougars held fitness testing just before camp at UNBC this week.

Athletic Therapist, Craig Hyslop says the biggest physical improvements is when a player is entering his second season or draft year.

“For example you see a kid when he is 16 or 17 and then he comes back for the following year and they become a little bit more developed as an athlete, better idea of the competition, little bit more motivation for the kids going in their draft year and the kids that were just drafted have a bit more to prove.”

Hyslop adds players from the midget ranks receive a lot more guidance when they arrive at camp for the first time.

“There is a little bit more direction in our league compared to the midget leagues for what they should be eating, how they should be working out, some kids will show up in the WHL and will not have had much guidance before, if they spend some time with our team and then go back home over the summer and they have a way better idea on how to properly workout.”

The results from the fitness testing does not always translate to how a player will do on the ice, but it will measure how hard they have been working out over the summer.
