A coroner’s inquest into the death of a 23-year-old Dawson Creek woman is set for next month.
It will begin on June 17th from the community’s Law Courts.
The BC Coroners Service were first alerted about the death of Jamie Diane Hope on April 14th of 2019 following events involving the Dawson Creek RCMP.
She died in hospital after going into medical distress while in custody.
A subsequent investigation was launched by the Independent Investigations Office of BC.
The investigation from the police watchdog found Hope was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over and searched by police.
Drugs and substance paraphernalia were found and both the driver and Hope were arrested.
The report states Hope was strip-searched after it was suspected she was in possession of drugs and placed in a holding cell.
Furthermore, the IIO noted officers observed a change in her behaviour and called paramedics who rushed her hospital where she was declared dead the following morning.
The IIO investigation said there was no evidence of wrongdoing in December of that year.
Larry Marzinzik, the presiding coroner, and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding her death.
