Lowering Crime Severity Index a goal of Mayor Yu’s Public Safety Committee

Prince George Mayor Simon Yu’s Standing Committee on Public Safety met for the first time yesterday. (Tuesday)

The committee is comprised of Mayor Yu, Councillors Trudy Klassen, Ron Polillo and Brian Skakun, as well as community members Robert Gagnon, Miranda Seymour, and John Zukowski.

“It’s the first meeting, so we did not go over any heavy-duty agenda in terms of special specific action items,” Yu said.

“We gathered together as a committee together with all the officials, to discuss what each other’s kind of a broad wish list in terms of what we wanted to see get done.”

Yu said some of the items on his wish list for the committee included lowering the City’s Crime Severity Index (CSI).

“Overall the Crime Rate Index for Prince George, it’s trending downwards for the last few years, but there are specific problems in the city that requires our special attention, so like the downtown and areas east of Queensway for example,” he explained.

Yu noted the CSI for Prince George is around 200, but the provincial average is around 100.

“The next item is obviously we need to talk about some specific issues, how to coordinate with next levels of government, perhaps to coordinate some of the statistics, some of the data regarding the various pockets of the downtown area, and to get RCMP to give us a little more of a breakdown in terms of the type of crime taking place, and how do we, as a community, find a way to move forward to mitigate some of the concerns the citizens have expressed to us.”

A date isn’t set for the next meeting yet, but Yu said he hopes to meet again as soon as possible.
