“Camp isn’t saying drink a ton of beer, but we will take those empties and turn them into an unbelievable experience for a kid.”
That is what Dave Horton, the Director of Ness Lake Bible Camp (NLBC), told My PG Now about their Cans for Kids bottle drive that will be held tomorrow (Saturday).
The drive is held annually through the Nechako Bottle Depot, which will match the total donations at the end of the day.
Horton said they raised around $8,000 for campers last year.
The money helps families or caregivers who could otherwise not afford to send their kids to camp.
“People use different amounts. Some families just need $100 or less off the price,” Horton said, mentioning the $8,000 raised last year would help between 20-40 kids get a week at camp.
“The cost of living is high, and camp is an extra-curricular spending thing. From our end, we think it is a necessity to childhood. For kids to come out and have a week on their own, independent play, activities and living is a massive win for confidence and leadership,” he said. “Kids learn how to look after themselves and make new relationships.”
NLBC is also sponsoring every kid who lives in the Hart, and is offering them a free week at camp this summer.
The drive will be held from 9:00 to 4:00 at the Nechako Bottle Depot on First Avenue.
Horton said anyone with three or more bags of bottles can arrange for them to be picked up from their house by contacting NLBC’s office.
