Cougars trade for import defenseman and sign draft pick

The Prince George Cougars have moved an overage player to a close division rival.

Oren Shtrom is heading south down Highway 97 to join the Kamloops Blazers – in return, the Cougars receive 19-year-old import defenseman Vochvest Vojtech.

The Czech defenseman played 67 games for the Blazers as an 18-year-old rookie last season, registering 5 assists and 60 penalty minutes.

Shtrom had 8 points and was a +10 in 15 playoff games with the Cougars this season, adding to his 27 points in 66 regular season games.

The now 20-year-old was acquired by the Cougars from the Everett Silvertips last offseason.

This leaves the Cougars with 7 overage 20-year-old players on their potential 2024-25 roster – Ondrej Becher, Borya Valis, Carlin Dezainde, Viliam Kmec, Koehn Ziemmer, Keaton Dowhaniuk, and Ty Young.

It also means the Cougars have 3 import players – Becher, Kmec, and Vojtech.

Each team in the WHL is only allowed to carry 3 overagers and 2 imports by the time the season gets underway.

The Cougars also signed their second round draft pick, Cooper Bratton, to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement this morning.

Bratton tallied 52 points in 27 games from the blue line for the Sask East Oilers U15 AA club.
